Azelaic acid

What it is. A naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid, produced by a yeast that lives on healthy skin. Long prescribed for rosacea and acne, and one of the few actives considered safe in pregnancy.

why it matters

It does three jobs: calms inflammation and redness, slows the pigment overproduction that leaves marks after a breakout, and normalises shedding inside the pore so it stays clear. On mature skin, where post-acne marks can persist for months, the mark-fading action is as important as spot prevention.
