Salicylic acid

What it is. A beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) originally derived from willow bark. Because it is oil-soluble, it mixes with sebum and works within the pore to help loosen buildup and keep pores looking clear.

why it matters for skin over 40

Salicylic acid is a well-established ingredient for blemish-prone skin, and it tends to be less drying than benzoyl peroxide. Its downside has been formulation: high-strength surface gels can feel drying and irritating on sensitive skin.
