Salicylic acid

What it is. A beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) derived from willow bark. Because it is oil-soluble, it dissolves into sebum and travels down into the pore, where it loosens the plug of oil and dead cells and calms inflammation.

why it matters for skin over 40

Salicylic acid targets the actual mechanism of a hormonal breakout, the blocked and inflamed follicle, without oxidising the barrier the way benzoyl peroxide does. Its historic weakness was delivery: as a surface gel it dries and irritates because most of it never reaches the pore.
