The best vitamin C serum for mature skin is not the strongest one

Vitamin C is one of the few skincare actives with genuinely strong evidence: it drives collagen synthesis, brightens uneven tone, and neutralises the free radicals that age skin. It is also one of the most fragile molecules in the entire category, and that fragility is why most vitamin C serums deliver a fraction of what the label promises.

the oxidation problem

L-ascorbic acid, the active form of vitamin C, is unstable in water, light, and air. Open a serum and it begins to oxidise: the clear liquid turns yellow, then amber, then brown. Oxidised vitamin C does nothing for collagen, and worse, it can generate the very free radicals it was meant to fight. Many bottles have oxidised meaningfully before they are half used.

The industry's answer has been to raise the percentage. 15%, 20%, sometimes higher. The logic is that if most of it is lost, start with more. But percentage on the label says nothing about how much survives to reach the layer of skin where collagen is built.

why mature skin makes this worse

After 45, the barrier is thinner and more reactive. High-percentage, low-pH vitamin C serums are notorious for stinging, and on a menopausal barrier that sting turns into redness and irritation that discourage daily use. So the paradox: the strongest serums are the ones mature skin can least tolerate, and the ones you cannot use every day cannot build collagen.

Bioavailability at the target layer is the only number that matters, and it is the one the industry leaves off the bottle.

What mature skin actually needs is a smaller amount of vitamin C that reaches the fibroblasts chemically intact, released gradually, without irritating the surface. Nano-encapsulation does exactly this. The vitamin C is sealed inside a lipid capsule that shields it from oxidation, carries it past the barrier, and releases it in the collagen layer over time. In tissue measurement, that translates to 146% greater vitamin C in skin versus the same active applied unencapsulated. A 3% encapsulated serum delivers more to the collagen layer than a 20% serum that never gets there.

what to look for

For skin over 45: a vitamin C that is stabilised against oxidation, that does not sting, that you can use in daylight, and ideally paired with a collagen-signalling partner that does not add irritation.
